The Review: Happy spring break if you're in college! If you're not in college, hope you've enjoyed your normal workweek. Sorry for a bit of a delay in posts, I've just gotten through arguably the hardest week of my academic career. But hey, we made it and now it's time to kick back and drink a lil' wine. Today's post is a really solid sauv blanc from the South Island of New Zealand, the motherland of sauv blanc. The cool nights, maritime climate, and minerally soils are the perfect recipe for crisp and refreshing cool-climate wines. This Kiwi Gold Sauvignon Blanc is no exception to that. It's kind of a "posterchild" for sauv blancs. To start out, it's SUPER aromatic on the nose and the fruit just jumps out of the glass. There's a lot of grapefruit, passionfruit, and papaya notes with a bit of a citrus undertone. I also got a little bit of mango? But I really wasn't entirely sure of that. Upon tasting, the wine was a lot more citrus-forward than it let on by its smell. The lime that I mentioned is a lot more prevalent. There's also still a decent amount of the fruit that I mentioned. The finish is really crisp and kind of minerally. Minerality in wine does not mean that it tastes like rocks. It technically is a tasting note that isn't fruity, herby, or spicy, so as you can see it's kind of weird to describe. The way that I described it for this particular wine was a cooling sensation as it finished, kind of in the way that minty gum cools your mouth (or like when you have minty water? Does any of this make sense?). This characteristic is the textbook crispness of Sauv blanc that makes it so pleasant and refreshing. The wine also really lingered on the tongue (In the future, I'll probably slip up and say that a wine has a long finish... it's the same thing).

So in summary, Kiwi Gold Sauvignon Blanc- Aromatic scent, fruit/citrus forward taste, super crisp and refreshing, classic sauvignon blanc. You heard it here folks, New Zealand Sauv Blancs are the best (you actually will hear that from literally just about everyone). And for 10 bucks, this wine is perfect for a party or a broke college kid.

bere solo vino buono,
