The Review: Happy belated mothers day to all you moms out there! Hope it was a relaxing day and you were well celebrated with love, desserts, and wine. For today's wine, we've got arguably the best bargain so far on my list all the way from the banks of the Rhône River- the 2017 Domaine de Carmignan Côtes du Rhône Rouge. Coming in at just $8 a bottle from Costco, this wine delivers wayyyy above its price point.

The Côtes du Rhône AOC in France is known for producing full-bodied, round, earthy reds with its warm climate, sunshine, and rich clay-limestone soils. Most famously, the largest AOC in the Rhône Valley produces varietals such as the ones we find here- predominantly grenache and syrah, with smaller varietals like mourvédre, carignan, and cinsault. Every one of these varietals is found in today's wine, thus making it quite the introduction to the Rhône arsenal. It's quickly turning into my favorite wine region, and if you haven't had a chance to drink a Rhône wine, please do (here's a great one to start with!). Alright, on to the review.

This wine pops off the bat with a rich purple-tinted red color in the glass. Right on the nose, you get classic Rhône aromas of ripe plum with lots of berries- particularly blueberry and raspberry. All of this is rounded out with a great little licorice undertone that helps add some complexity. I gotta say, it's really approachable. I don't know what I was expecting, but it definitely surpassed all expectations after the smell test. For the taste, this wine gives everything I wanted from the nose- that classic burst of berry and rounded plum that is to be expected from a grenache/syrah blend is at the forefront of the attack. The medium-minus (slightly less than medium) finish delivers a great peppery spice and earthy smoothness that's nothing less than totally delicious.

The 2017 Domaine de Carmignan Rouge is a fantastic introduction into a great (and classic) winemaking region. Honestly, I bought 3 bottles of it... no shame. It really is a total steal and would make for an outstanding everyday table wine or a party wine. I think you could definitely impress a few people pouring this one! Anyways, that's about it. As always- stay safe and let me know if you have any questions.

drink what you like,

db
