The Review: We're venturing into hipster grape territory today, so slap on your skinny jeans and get ready! Grüner Veltliner is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated grapes in the world of wine. It's really only grown in Austria, so that's probably why it doesn't get much press... But I'm out to change that!

GV is very similar to Sauvignon Blanc. It's really high in acid, has lots of citrus and green apple notes, and has a hint of something else- usually a touch of a white pepper note or a faint floral note. So if you find yourself loving Sauvignon Blanc, this can be a great way to mix it up some without venturing very far from what you know you like. As an added bonus, it's usually pretty cheap too!

The 2019 Hugl Weine GV isn't necessarily the best example of this grape, but it's one that I've started to see in a ton of different grocery stores and is still pretty good. It's pretty simple but great for crushing on a hot day. The nose is pretty faint and doesn't offer much. There's mostly just some citrus and green apple. The taste presents citrus, some tropical fruits, and a hint of white pepper. There's also a nice minerally note. I would say serve this one ice cold. Also, don't quote me on this but I think it's unfiltered and might be biodynamic?

Overall, I think the best way to describe these wines is just like Sauvignon Blanc- fun and really refreshing. They're (usually) not going to knock your socks off with complexity, but they're really tasty and are sure to be a party pleaser, especially because not many people know about it. They're also never really "bad." So if you see one in the store, grab it! I'd be willing to bet it's going to be pretty yummy. Better get to drinking some before it gets too cold out!

drink what you like,
