The Review: Some of the most expensive wines in the world are coming out of Burgundy, France at the moment. These wines are historically the most renowned Pinot Noirs, and the famed Domaine de la Romanee Conti regularly puts out new releases that retail at over $1000. While tons of super-rich collectors absolutely eat this kind of stuff up, many wine professionals will tell you that some of the worst values out there are from Burgundy. Even though Pinot Noir is naturally expensive (I feel like I've explained why in a previous blog at some point...), Burgundian wines really decide to ramp up the price a little bit more. For reference, you usually can't find a really good red Burgundy for below $30... That being said, Burgundian wines got recognition for a reason. They're a beautiful expression of Pinot, and really can be a treat.
If you want the taste a solid entry-level Burgundy wine and a great Pinot in general, but don't want to pay $25 or $30, look right towards the Louis Jadot Bourgogne Pinot Noir. The "Bourgogne" classification is the entry-level classification in Burgundy, and sometimes you can find some gems here (you can also find crap, so be cautious). The reason I love this Jadot Pinot so much is that, aside from its unbeatable price, it offers all of the flavors we want from Burgundy. Louis Jadot is one of the most famed wineries in the world, and they've been making wine in the region of Beaune since 1859. They're also just an absolute powerhouse, so they show incredible consistency for a great price.
The 2018 Jadot Pinot (which is on shelves just about everywhere), shows very fresh fruit aromas like cherry, raspberry, currant, and a tiny bit of plum. There's also the classic aromas of earth (sometimes presents itself as mushroom), with a little bit of vanilla and cedar. The taste itself is very fresh, with some tart red fruits such as cherry, plum, and currant. There's some nice zesty baking spice and a little bit of a mushroomy funk that we're looking for.
Just to prove this wine's value to you, I actually wrote, "Great expression of Burgundian Pinot for the price" in my original notes. It really is one of the best and cheapest Burgundies you're gonna find, and it's just great with some grilled meats and mushrooms. Serve it slightly chilled, maybe slap it in the fridge for like 30 minutes.
drink what you like,
