The Review: Sorry for the little bit of time away from the blog! I decided to take a break for a week or two. But now I'm back and I've got some really fun wines to share over the next few weeks, especially as we move into summer weather. Today's wine is a super crushable and light rosé from one of the most famous rosé regions in the world; and best of all, it won't break the bank!

The 2019 Gérard Bertrand Côtes des Roses probably will catch your eye because of its really unique bottle shape. It's got a glass stopper on top of an elongated neck, but most notably the base looks like a rose. This is definitely a cool-looking bottle if you keep bottles like other really cool people do, but if not, the wine inside is just as cool. Rosé from the South of France is some of the best in the world, and for good reason. Usually made from Grenache, Syrah, and Carignan (like this one), these wines are usually fruit forward with a nice little bit of spice and flashy minerality. This comes as a result of the warmer temperatures and the barren limestone soils in which the grapes grow. I believe I've written about a rosé from Provence before, which is probably the most well-known subsection of the "South of France," but Languedoc (where this is from) is equally renowned.

This wine presents aromas of mostly tart red fruits like cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, but there's also this really nice green note that I described as "rhubarb." Also adding to some interesting bitter aromas is notes of citrus pith and violet. The taste was a little more complicated, with acidic notes of sour candied cherry, candied watermelon, raspberry, strawberry, and grapefruit- but also some interesting secondary notes. There was some white pepper, saline brush (common in Mediterranean wines), and some citrus blossom that added lots of depth to what could've been a very straightforward wine. This really added some extra points in my book, because it's quite frankly kind of challenging to find an exciting rosé because most are made with chugging in mind (this is fun and good, but not good for critical tasting).

I found this particular wine at Costco, but Gérard Bertrand is a pretty well-known producer, so I'd bet you can find this wine at other stores. If you happen to come across it, definitely grab some for your next outdoor gathering! Enjoy your week and the perfect weather.

drink what you like,
