The Review: Hope everyone had a nice holiday! As New Year's Eve rapidly approaches, it's that time of year to stock up on some bubbly. If you're not one of those people who drink sparkling wine on a regular basis (yes, we exist), picking out a good bottle for NYE can be stressful. While many people opt for cheaper sparklers (may I point you towards previous blogs about Dibon Cava and Kirkland Champagne if this is your choice), others use this day as a time to bust out a bottle of the good good. While cheaper options are a great way to get the experience, there's something special about popping open a bottle of real Champagne to celebrate. If you're looking for the real stuff for a price that won't hurt too much, I stumbled on G.H. Mumm's Grand Cordon Brut Champagne on sale at Costco for $28- a steal for a bottle of well-known Champagne.
G.H. Mumm is one of the most well-established Champagne producers, and they consistently put out high ranking wines. They've been prevalent in Champagne since 1827, and their famed "Cordon" blends have been a staple in the wine world since 1876- so suffice it to say that they know what they're doing.
The Grand Cordon Brut from G.H. Mumm is blended from 300 base wines and sourced from over 100 crus. This blending process allows for incredible consistency and quality over the years. There are aromas of tart green apples, lemon, some white peach, and a little pastry dough. The wine was lush and had a mousse texture. There were notes of green apple, a little strawberry, and some cranberry that were accompanied by secondary aromas of toasted almond and brioche. There was great depth and a long finish, especially for a lower-priced Champagne.
If you're looking for real Champagne and don't mind spending a few dollars more than you maybe would have, this is a great wine that will impress anyone. And with the discounted price that Costco is selling it for, this is a great pick up. If you're not looking for real Champagne, G.H. Mumm also has an American operation called Mumm Napa. They put out California sparklers for around $18 that are phenomenal as well... it just doesn't have "Champagne" on the bottle, so the price is lower. Whatever you decide to drink, I hope you have a safe and happy New Year. Let's all hope that it's only up from here.
drink what you like,
